How do Chamber Events & Programs benefit you, the Chamber Member?
Chamber events are networking opportunities, and a way for you to showcase your business and build relationships. When you attend a networking event you should have a basic plan for networking.
Do you have a networking plan?
You can hope that by attending meetings and being introduced to others that business is just going to happen for you. . If you notice the word is net-WORK, not net-SIT or net-AUTOMATIC. While it is work, it is not hard and it can be quite easy with the right purpose and plan of action.
The most important first step is to know your purpose for going to networking functions. You must know your purpose. There are several reasons for being at a networking meeting. Regardless of what your purpose is for attending a networking event, you must understand that it is never about getting the sale at the meeting. Never! It is about building relationships. Remember, people only buy from those they know and trust.
Here are a few examples:
- Strategic partnerships: Are you at networking meetings for a strategic partner? What type of strategic partner are you looking for? A basket making company may want to partner with a realtor who gives “Welcome Home” baskets to their recent buyers. That is a partnership. New moms, for example, receive many baskets of flowers and other items from family members and friends. Build a partnership with the maternity ward.
- Build a referral base: Do you need a referral for a specific type of service that you provide? Are you looking for somebody to help your business? Are you looking for a graphic designer or a web designer or printer? Be clear about what type of referral you are seeking. The clearer you are the more qualified referrals you will receive.
- Build your list: If you are there just to build your list, networking is a great way to do that. I have met several of people that attend network expos and conventions who have e-zines and marketing materials and all they want is to build their contact list to send their information to. Be sure to get permission BEFORE you add them to your database.
- Recognition: For many businesses, networking opportunities are a way to become recognized. For example, an ambulance transport company isn’t looking for a direct sale or business, but rather looking to introduce their name and service.
Remember, at a networking event that it should never be about getting the sale; never! If you do get a sale; wonderful! This is a big misconception that a lot of people make when they network. Networking is mostly about building relationships with the people you meet. You want to go with the knowledge that it is a part of your networking and marketing efforts, not the ONLY part.
