In the interests of local businesses and the state and regional economy, the Sierra Vista Area Chamber of Commerce calls on its membership to vote “no” on Proposition 127, the renewable energy initiative, in the Nov. 6 General Election.

The ballot question would embed a requirement in the Arizona Constitution mandating that 50% percent of the electricity generated in the state come from solar, wind, and other renewable sources. Meeting the 50% percent renewable requirement will put Arizona in line with California, which has electricity rates much higher than Arizona. Higher costs will result from new investments in battery technology, additional solar capacity and other renewable power sources totaling an estimated $1.2 to $1.5 billion for Arizona G&T Cooperatives, the primary supplier of the electricity distributed by SSVEC.

The cost of accomplishing this requirement will result in a substantial increase in monthly bills for ALL businesses served by Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative. This cost will be borne by all chamber members who use electricity, resulting increases in rates of about 47%. SSVEC tells us, by way of example, the average convenience store will see a $992 increase in monthly costs. Department stores monthly bills will go up as much as $7,900. Even our schools will feel the pinch with a $1,311 average increase. And with residential bills going up an average of $60, clearly customers of chamber business will have less discretionary spending for shopping or eating out. All of this will obviously place a huge burden on our local economy.

We urge our membership to cast a “no” vote on Proposition 127 to avoid the financial hardship that this initiative is certain to cause for Chamber businesses and the local economy.
